So the NCAA isn't a place to develop into the Pro's?

In lieu of some idiot that told me the NCAA isn't the best place for future NHL players, and then for the sole argument of which school has developed more players into the NHL? I decided to compile some stuff. Now keep in mind this list is of NCAA Schools that had the most players who played in the NHL in 07-08, which by the total of players is 253! 253 players, meaning I could field 11 and half teams in the NHL with former NCAA players :

22(Michigan) Andrew Ebbett, Matt Hunwick, Aaron Ward, David Moss, Eric Nystrom, Danny Richmond, T.J. Hensick, Marty Turco, Andrew Cogliano, Mike Van Ryn, Mike Cammalleri, Jack Johnson, Mike Komisarek, Josh Langfeld, Jed Ortmeyer, John Madden, Mike Comrie, Andy Hilbert, Jeff Tambellini, Mike Knuble,Mike Brown,Brendan Morrison (Most NCAA titles, but haven't won lately, I'm kind of miffed at this... Maybe 4 great NHL'ers in this crowd?)

18(Wisconsin)Curtis Joseph, David Tanabe,Rene Bourque, Adam Burish, Jake Dowell, Jack Skille, Chris Chelios,Brian Rafalski, Tom Gilbert, Sean Hill, Ryan Suter, Steve Reinprecht, Brian Elliott, Kyle Turris, Dany Heatley,Andy Wozniewski,Robbie Earl,Joe Pavelski
(Not surprising they've won a NCAA title recently, but today's day and age, they're over recruiting, and it'll start to show later I'd give them 6 Great NHL'ers in this crowd)

16(North Dakota) Drew Stafford,David Hale,Ryan Bayda, Jonathan Toews, Matt Greene, Brady Murray, Brandon Bochenski, Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Jason Blake, Matt Smaby, Ryan Johnson, Matt Jones, Brian Lee, Mike Commodore(Shocked at the low count, but understandable they rebuilt from their last championship, and 11 of them joined the NHL within the past 4 years. I'll go with 7 Great NHL'ers in this crowd)

15(Boston College)Andrew Alberts, Bobby Allen, Chuck Kobasew,Patrick Eaves, Marty Reasoner,Brian Boyle, Jeff Giuliano, Peter Harrold, Brian Gionta, Mike Mottau,Bill Guerin,Ryan Shannon,Scott Clemmensen,Brooks Orpik,Rob Scuderi (3 Great NHL'ers)

13(Minnesota) Phil Kessel, Thomas Vanek, Jordan Leopold, Wyatt Smith, Paul Martin, Barry Tallackson, Johnny Pohl, Erik Johnson, Jeff Taffe, Alex Goligoski, Keith Ballard, Ryan Potulny, Kyle Okposo (Shocking with how many times this teams considered a contenders, they don't have more? 6 Great NHL'ers)
13(Michigan State)Drew Miller, Jim Slater, Ryan Miller, Rod Brind'Amour, Duncan Keith, John-Michael Liles, Justin Abdelkader, Shawn Horcoff,David Booth, Bryan Smolinski,Mike York,Adam Hall,Mike Weaver (4 Great NHL'ers)

12(St. Cloud State)Casey Borer,Tim Conboy, Matt Cullen,Bret Hedican, Joe Jensen, Tyler Arnason, Jeff Finger, Duvie Westcott, Mark Hartigan, Mark Parrish,Ryan Malone, Joe Motzko (Who would've thought that a school that has never won an NCAA game would put out more NHL players, then a team that has won numerous titles? (No offense Denver) 4 Great NHL'ers)
12(Boston University) Joe DiPenta, Adrian Aucoin, Jay Pandolfo, Shawn Bates, Rick DiPietro,Tom Poti, Chris Bourque,Keith Tkachuk, Ryan Whitney, Chris Drury, Freddy Meyer,Mike Grier (4 Great NHL'ers)

10(Maine)Brett Clark, Ben Guite, Jim Howard,Dustin Penner, Ted Purcell, Keith Carney, Greg Moore,Mike Lundin,Doug Janik,Paul Kariya (Weak they've only put out 1 Great NHL'er)

8(Denver)Kevin Doell, Paul Stastny, Gabe Gauthier, Wade Dubielewicz, Ryan Caldwell, Matt Carle, Connor James, Matt Pettinger (With that many titles recently you would have thought more right? Me too, only put out 2 Great NHL'ers)

8(Clarkson) Kent Huskins, Todd Marchant, Todd White, Craig Conroy, Erik Cole, Randy Jones,Willie Mitchell,Chris Clark (Shocking Clarkson is in this group? No NHL Greats, sorry Conroy)

Also I'll update with how many teams currently have the most NHL draft picks. Also one thing to remember is this is just last year only, not overall the years. I'm sure it's going to be a lot different by the end of this year..

I'm not sure where you are going with this post but it was sweet to see alma's getting some props.

The point I was making is that the NCAA puts out NHL players, I was shocked at how many too. I also found it funny that this guy/gal in the other forum said no Great Players come from the NCAA. At that point I realized he/she was just dumb. But at least had me wondering which school puts out the most?? I then was shocked at Michigan with it's high number, and the "State of Hockey's" crown jewel college with such a low number.

I think Minnesotas got a small number because they only recruited from Minnesota till Lucia brought Grant over the river. Also, they have a system that doesn't necessarily need pro-type players to fit.

Brodog, Phil Kessel-Born in Wisco, Vanek-born in Europe, Barry T-Born in Grafton,ND, and lastly Ryan P-born in G-Funk.

A total of 4 of their 13 players who played in the NHL last year weren't from m i n n e s o t a, minnesota, minnesota, aaaayyyyyy Gophers! That's unfortunate, maybe they should get the Uni to pay for their ass. coaches to drive outside the state... (Last time they won the big tourney, they had a few North Dakotans, an Austrian, and some others)... Actually they were pretty good at the start of this year, but we all know you don't get a trophy for the 1st half the year.

This is a great post. Phil Kessel is a beast. I'm glad to see BU so high up on the list here... only one less than Boston College x-(

I think the NCAA is great for upcoming NHLers. Just look at Colin Wilson and Matt Gilroy. No one thought they would stay, but they're staying one more year to help them develop further.

Great post.

I had to look Craig Weller up. I don't remember him as a UMD guy. Turns out that was for good reason, he only played one season and even then he only played 6 games, scoring 1 point.

It took 8 seasons in juniors (3 teams), but he's in the NHL. So yeah he's a UMD player but that really shouldn't count.

Joe: Philys is a beast. How about him and Wheeler tearing it up in Boston. They remind me of Zajac and Parise (former WCHA players playing on the same team) hopefully they can make a run into the playoffs and get some hype going.

USAFA Bulldog: I too had to look up a lot of guys, as I thought no way. Actually I don't really know how accurate that list is. (There could be more guys that should be on this list.) But I pulled a majority of them from the NCAA's web site. Then I had to regroup them from their NHL teams, to their NCAA teams.

While I won't disagree that Wisconsin is over recruiting, I don't see how that is "going to catch up w/ them" in terms of NHL players. Sure some of the guys you list are old, but the following could likely be in an NHL jersey in the next four or so seasons.

Jamie McBain
Ryan McDonagh
Jake Gardiner
Brendan Smith
Cody Goloubef
Derek Stepan
Blake Geoffrion
Justin Schultz (2009 recruit)

Prehaps our recruits aren't as "highly regarded" as the past few seasons, but NHL teams like Eaves and the way he develops players, so there is probably a surprise (or two) on the roster right now (and of the recruits coming in) who might see the NHL in the future. Based on draft position, Joe Pavelski has no business being an NHL star.

Overall good info.
